I fear the withered leaves that burn in the summer sun. My yard is half sunny and half shade and therefore I am trying to discover that Goldilocks that will receive adequate light and not turn pale. And protect it against the wind also?

The best place to plant a Japanese Maple is a spot that receives dappled sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade. These trees have delicate leaves that can scorch in intense, direct heat. They also require well-draining, slightly acidic soil and protection from strong winds. Planting them near a patio or as a focal point in a sheltered garden ensures they thrive while showcasing their stunning seasonal foliage.

I totally understand your concern about the withered leaves, Japanese Maples can be pretty sensitive to direct sunlight. Considering your yard has both sunny and shady areas, I'd say the ideal spot would be somewhere that gets morning sun and dappled afternoon shade, that way it gets some direct light but not too much. As for protection from the wind, you might want to plant it near a fence or a wall that can block harsh gusts, or even near a group of trees that can provide a natural buffer. This should help your Japanese Maple thrive and keep its beautiful leaf color.
