How do you properly plant garlic cloves step by step?

I just bought a few organic bulbs from the farmer's market to use as seed, but I’m a bit nervous about the technical side of things. I know I need to separate the cloves, but I’m unsure about which end should face up and how deep the holes need to be. Could someone explain how to plant garlic cloves so that they don't rot in the damp soil over the winter months?

  • Choose bulbs: Use healthy, firm garlic bulbs and separate into cloves (keep skins on).
  • Pick a spot: Full sun with well-drained soil.
  • Prepare soil: Loosen soil and mix in compost.
  • Plant cloves: Pointed end up, 2–3 inches deep.
  • Spacing: Keep 4–6 inches between cloves, rows 8–12 inches apart.
  • Water lightly: Keep soil moist, not soggy.
  • Mulch: Add straw or leaves to protect and retain moisture.
  • Care: Water regularly and remove weeds.

When planting garlic cloves, start by separating them from the bulb, making sure each clove has its papery wrapper intact, as this helps protect it from rot. The pointed end of the clove should face upwards, while the flat base faces downwards, this way the plant can grow naturally. Dig holes about 4-6 inches deep, depending on your soil type, and place a clove in each, covering it with soil. Leave about 4-6 inches of space between each clove to allow for proper growth. Make sure the soil isn't too damp, as this can cause rot, and add some compost or well-draining material if necessary.

To plant garlic cloves, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Break a garlic bulb into cloves without peeling them. Plant each clove 2 inches deep, pointy side up, 4–6 inches apart. Cover with soil, water lightly, and mulch. Regular watering and weeding help healthy growth and larger garlic bulbs.

In order to plant garlic, separate cloves, but retaining papery skins. Plant in well-drained soil with the pointed end facing up, 2 1/2-3 inches deep and 4-6 inches spacing. Cover with soil and some mulch (such as straw) to prevent rotting and to keep them safe during the winter.

To plant garlic, separate a bulb into cloves and plant them with the pointy side up, about 2–3 inches deep and spaced a few inches apart in well-drained soil. Choose a sunny spot, water lightly, and add mulch to protect the soil. With regular watering and basic care, the garlic will grow and be ready to harvest when the leaves turn yellow.
