How do you properly plant garlic cloves step by step?

I just bought a few organic bulbs from the farmer's market to use as seed, but I’m a bit nervous about the technical side of things. I know I need to separate the cloves, but I’m unsure about which end should face up and how deep the holes need to be. Could someone explain how to plant garlic cloves so that they don't rot in the damp soil over the winter months?

  • Choose bulbs: Use healthy, firm garlic bulbs and separate into cloves (keep skins on).
  • Pick a spot: Full sun with well-drained soil.
  • Prepare soil: Loosen soil and mix in compost.
  • Plant cloves: Pointed end up, 2–3 inches deep.
  • Spacing: Keep 4–6 inches between cloves, rows 8–12 inches apart.
  • Water lightly: Keep soil moist, not soggy.
  • Mulch: Add straw or leaves to protect and retain moisture.
  • Care: Water regularly and remove weeds.
