What is the correct way to plant grass seed for best growth?

My backyard has several patchy areas that look quite bare after the winter. I’ve bought a high-quality sun and shade mix, but I want to ensure I don't waste it by just throwing it on the ground. Does anyone have a guide on how to plant a grass seed properly, specifically regarding soil aeration and the ideal depth for coverage? I'm also wondering if I should use a starter fertilizer immediately or wait a few weeks.

I've been in your shoes before with patchy areas in my yard, and I found that proper preparation is key to getting good growth from your grass seed. First, loosen the soil in those bare areas to about 8 inches deep to get some air in there and remove any debris. Rake the soil to create a smooth surface, then spread your seed mix evenly, aiming for about a quarter inch of coverage. As for fertilizer, I'd recommend using a starter fertilizer immediately, as it'll give your seeds a boost and help them establish themselves quickly. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the package for the right amount to use, and keep the soil consistently moist during the first few weeks after planting.
