I’ve noticed certain flowers are often used in funerals. Which flowers are most commonly chosen, and what meanings or symbolism make them suitable for such occasions?

The typical flowers of funerals are lilies, which symbolize the renewed innocence of the soul; roses, which symbolize love and grief, and carnations, which symbolize remembrance. Chrysanthemums are also commonplace as they are considered to be a symbol of death or sorrow in most societies and gladioli is an indication of character strength and moral uprightness in the times of hardship.

Common funeral flowers include:
  • Lily – symbolizes peace and the soul’s purity
  • Rose – love, respect, and remembrance
  • Chrysanthemum – honor and grief (especially in many cultures)
  • Carnation – admiration and remembrance
  • Gladiolus – strength and integrity
Why: These flowers express emotions like love, respect, sympathy, and remembrance in a meaningful way.

Examples of funeral flowers may include lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, and orchids. Lily means harmony and the return of the soul to innocence; rose is associated with love and reverence. Chrysanthemum means grief and memory. Carnation indicates admiration and eternal love; orchid shows sympathy and eternal love for the dead.

Common funeral flowers include lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, and carnations. Lilium symbolize peace and the soul’s return to innocence, while Rosa express love and respect. Chrysanthemum represent honor and mourning in many cultures, and carnations convey remembrance. These flowers are chosen for their meanings, calm appearance, and ability to express sympathy, support, and respect during times of loss and remembrance.

The most common funeral flowers are lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, and carnations because each carries a traditional meaning. Lilies symbolize the soul’s return to peace, roses show love and respect (white for purity, red for love), chrysanthemums represent grief and honor (especially in many cultures), and carnations are used for remembrance. From what I’ve seen, people usually choose these not just for how they look, but because they quietly express emotions that are hard to put into words during that time.
