What is the Use of A Garden Fork?

I’m starting a new vegetable patch and I’m trying to decide which manual tools are essential for breaking up compacted clay soil. Beyond basic digging, what is the use of a garden fork compared to a standard spade when it comes to aerating the ground or lifting root vegetables? I’ve seen models with flat tines and others with pointed tines, so I’d appreciate some guidance on which version is better for turning compost piles versus prepping a planting bed without destroying the soil structure.

A garden fork is used to loosen, lift, and turn soil in the garden. It helps break up compacted soil, mix in compost or fertilizer, remove weeds, and harvest root vegetables like potatoes. It improves soil aeration and drainage.
