What are topiary trees and how are they shaped?

I’ve seen decorative topiary trees shaped into designs. How are they maintained and trimmed properly? Are certain tree species better for topiary than others?

Topiary is basically the art of trimming shrubs and trees into sculpted shapes, and box and yew are the most popular choices because they have dense foliage and respond really well to being shaped with shears a couple of times a year.

Topiary trees are plants (usually evergreen shrubs like boxwood or yew) that are trimmed into decorative shapes like balls, cones, spirals, or even animals. They’re shaped by regularly pruning new growth using shears, often following a frame or guide when doing complex designs, simple ones like spheres are just done by eye with practice. I’ve tried a small spiral once, and honestly, the key is patience and frequent light trimming rather than cutting too much at once.
