What are spruce trees and how do they grow?

I want to understand spruce trees and how they differ from pine or fir trees. What conditions do they need to thrive? Are they suitable for home gardens?

Spruces are evergreen conifers with that classic pointy Christmas tree shape, they prefer cooler climates and do best in well-drained soil with full sun, and once established they're actually pretty low maintenance.
