Is there a trick on how to cut a dragon fruit without making a massive mess?

I just bought this beautiful, vibrant pink pitahaya from the international market, but I've never actually prepared one at home before. The scaled skin looks a bit intimidating, and I want to present it nicely for a fruit platter. What is the standard technique for how to cut a dragon fruit safely? I'm hoping to get clean, uniform cubes or slices without crushing the soft flesh inside.

Dragon fruit looks intimidating, but it’s actually one of the cleanest fruits to prep once you realize the skin is basically just a wrapper. The "trick" is to avoid peeling it like an apple.
  • Slice it in half lengthwise (from the stem to the bottom).
  • Score the flesh: Use a paring knife to cut a grid pattern (horizontal and vertical lines) into the fruit. Be careful not to poke through the skin!
  • Scoop it out: Use a large spoon to swoop under the flesh. The pre-cut cubes will tumble right out into a bowl, and the mess stays inside the "shell."

Yes, an easy trick for cutting Dragon Fruit neatly is to slice it in half lengthwise and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. You can also score the inside into cubes before scooping to avoid extra mess.

Yes the easiest trick is to place the Dragon fruit on a cutting board, slice it in half lengthwise, then use a spoon to scoop the flesh out cleanly from the skin. You can also score the inside into cubes before scooping for neat bite-sized pieces. Using a sharp knife and cutting on a stable surface helps avoid juice spills, and chilling the fruit first can make it firmer and less messy to handle.

Yes—use a sharp knife, cut dragon fruit lengthwise, score the flesh in a grid, then scoop with a spoon. Keep skin intact to reduce juice mess and maintain clean presentation.
