Are snake plants toxic to cats, and is it safe to keep them indoors?

I’ve been looking to add some greenery to my living room but I’m worried about my kitten chewing on the leaves. I know these are popular for air purification, but I've heard mixed reports about their safety. Before I bring one home, I need to know are snake plants toxic to cats if they happen to ingest a small piece of the foliage? I'm curious if the toxicity is mild or if it requires an immediate vet visit, and if there are specific varieties that are safer than others.

I totally get your concern, I've had a similar situation with my own cat and plants. Snake plants are indeed toxic to cats, the leaves contain a toxin called calcium oxalate that can cause oral and gastrointestinal irritation if ingested. If your kitten chews on a small piece of the foliage, it's likely to experience some discomfort, like vomiting or diarrhea, but it's usually not life-threatening. However, it's still best to keep an eye on them and consult with a vet if you notice any severe symptoms. As for safer varieties, I couldn't find any specific ones that are non-toxic to cats, so it's probably best to just keep the plant out of your kitten's reach.
