Are Hibiscus Flowers Perennial or Seasonal?

I love the tropical vibe that hibiscus adds to a garden, but I’m confused by the different labels at the hardware store. Specifically, are hibiscus perennial flowers that can survive a hard freeze, or are they intended to be replaced every year? I’ve seen "Hardy" versions and "Tropical" versions, and I’m trying to figure out which one is best for a permanent spot in my landscaping.
